How to Move Bitcoin From an Exchange to Your Own Wallet

If your Bitcoin is sitting on an exchange, you are trusting that company with your money. You are trusting that they will not get hacked, will not freeze your account, and will not go bankrupt. History shows that all three happen regularly.

Moving your Bitcoin to a self-custody wallet is the single most important thing you can do to protect your investment. Here is how to do it.

Step 1: Choose a Self-Custody Wallet

Pick a wallet that is Bitcoin-only, open in its principles, and does not require personal information to use. Multi-coin wallets add complexity and attack surface. You want software that does one thing and does it well.

bit21 is a good starting point. It runs on Android and as a web app, supports all Bitcoin address types, and requires no signup. You can generate a new wallet or import an existing one using your recovery phrase.

Step 2: Create Your Wallet

Open the wallet app and create a new wallet. The app will generate a 12 or 24-word recovery phrase. This is the most important part of the entire process.

Write these words down on paper. In order. Every word matters. Do not take a screenshot. Do not save it in a notes app. Do not email it to yourself. Paper, pen, secure location. If you lose this phrase and your phone breaks, your Bitcoin is gone permanently.

Step 3: Send a Small Test Amount

Before moving your full balance, send a small amount first. Go to your wallet app, tap "Receive," and copy your Bitcoin address. Go to your exchange, initiate a withdrawal, paste the address, enter a small amount (like $10 worth), and confirm.

Wait for the transaction to confirm. This usually takes 10 to 60 minutes depending on network congestion and the fee you paid. Once confirmed, you will see the Bitcoin in your wallet.

Step 4: Move the Rest

After your test transaction confirms and you see it in your wallet, repeat the process with the rest of your Bitcoin. Use the same receive address or generate a new one for privacy. Review the withdrawal details carefully before confirming.

Check the address character by character. Bitcoin transactions are irreversible. If you send to the wrong address, there is no way to get it back. Take your time.

Step 5: Verify Your Backup

After all your Bitcoin is in your wallet, verify that your recovery phrase works. Some wallets let you check by re-entering the words. If yours does not, you can test by deleting the app, reinstalling it, and restoring from your phrase. Your balance should appear exactly as before.

What About Fees?

You will pay a network fee for each withdrawal. Exchange fees vary. Bitcoin network fees depend on how congested the network is. Check mempool.space to see current fee levels. If fees are high, wait for a quieter period. Weekends tend to have lower fees.

You Are Now in Control

Once your Bitcoin is in your self-custody wallet and your recovery phrase is securely backed up, you have achieved financial sovereignty. No exchange can freeze your funds. No government can seize them without physically accessing your recovery phrase. Your Bitcoin is yours.
